Katelijne Olie
My practice is based on a combination of gaining -and imparting- knowledge and creating space for the imagination. Every answer I find, seems to raise a new question. I am guided by my curiosity, and with my work I hope to inspire people to have a curious attitude towards their everyday life.
01. Licht/Donker Catalogus
Portrait photography by Sterre Datthijn Finouk
Exhibition by Faam Utrecht, De Maakruimte, De Kleine kunstkamer.
Cover design inspired by a design by Vera Geldermans
I was asked to design the catalog for the exposition Licht/Donker. Licht/Donker was initiated by FAAM, De Maakruimte and De Kleine Kunstkamer. The exhibition was heavily inspired by the building havenloods. The catalogus was to be a way to remember the exhibition, and since all the participants were upcoming, a nice way to put them in the spotlight. Around thirty participants, individuals and collectives, based in Utrecht came together to share their understanding of “Light” and “Dark”.

02. Dinke van der Zalm
Graduation project campaign design
I had the opportunity to create the campaign for the graduation project of Dinke van der Zalm. Her interactive installation lets people interact with a slime mold. In the design of the campaign, I was heavily inspired by way mold moves. The way that human veins are just a repeated pattern that we can recognise in branches, lightning and mold. I am so inspired by the work that Dinke makes, and I loved to design the posters and stickers for her.

03. Kōyo
With TOSAM: Thomas van der Vlis
For artist Anne Schillings, Thomas and I designed a zine, to conclude Anne’s trip to Japan. On her trip, Anne visited a lot of Japanese sights, that inspired her to paint a lot. Her painting are collected in this riso-printed zine, along with some photos that inspired the paintings. Anne personally painted all of the zine covers, so every zine exists as a work on its own.

04. Beeld bij het bos
Collaboration with Joey Streppel
Berenson For this book, Joey Streppel and I turned to the forest. Something we often do, but it’s not so often we publicate it. The forest is a place for us to reconnect with nature, something that we draw a lot of inspiration from. This publication shows our differences and similarities. Like the forest, this publication allowed us space to create, and come together, while also discussing our differences.

05. FDFA
With Bruens & Van Eijk: Ralph Bruens and Brigit Van Eijk
For the identity of FDFA 2023, the theme Buiten de lijntjes (Outside the Lines), asked attention for celebrating indifferences and creativity. FDFA is a yearly festival in Arnhem that celebrates fashion and the creatives who work with fashion. Ralph, Brigit and I created a visual identity that arose from handmade typography in combination with digital interventions.

06. Story of Synchronicity
As shown at Soul Mind Life Soul at De Nijverheid
For this publication I got inspired by the way things can fall into place. I imagined the invisible force behind things falling into place to be weather. How wind moves thing from one place to another. How rain makes sure things stay put, and wind doesn’t affect them. The way weather affects both man made objects and leaves, rocks, branches and other things that erode. In this publication I imagined motives for the wind to move a certain way. I documented proof of my belief that the wind brings things together.

07. Small wonders
Self initiated, partially found footage (stones in the front)
I thrifted a book about minerals. I have been collecting minerals, and part of me believes that they all have a special effect on your well being. The other part of me is interested in the way the minerals are shaped and brought up to the surface. I had once seen an image of sand under the microscope, that reminded me of the fact that everything that exists on earth, exists in different scales. A grain of sand is not a round piece of rock that is either black, brown or more see trough. A beach is actually just a collection of a lot of really small rocks that are shaped by water and other conditions.

08. Traces of human interventions
Self initiated
I have been collecting proof of humans interacting with their environment for years. It all started with a fascination for lost gloves, that people in the Netherlands all too often drop, when cycling to work or school. I noticed that people who found gloves on the ground, sometimes pick them up, and display them on a higer surface, for someone to retrieve. When it’s not gloves, I often find objects that people seem to have moved. Branches that people pick up and later lay down somewhere else, or the collecting of rocks and storing them somewhere.
